About Shinty

Shinty — or camanachd in Scottish Gaelic — is one of the oldest team sports in the world and is deeply woven into the culture and identity of the Scottish Highlands. Played with curved sticks (camans) and a small hard ball, it's a fast, physical, and spectacular game that has been played across the Highlands for centuries.

The sport is governed by the Camanachd Association, founded in 1893, and the top tier of the game is the Premiership — one of the most competitive domestic leagues in Highland sport. Local clubs compete across multiple divisions from the Premiership down to junior and youth levels.

For communities across Lochaber and Argyll, shinty is far more than a sport — it's a connection to Highland heritage, a focal point for villages, and a source of fierce and passionate local rivalry. Nevis Radio is proud to be the voice of that story.
