About Us

Nevis Radio is based in Fort William and has been broadcasting across the West Highlands since 1992.

We are completely independent from other radio stations and broadcast 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Most of our airtime is hosted by more than 30 volunteer presenters. We also employ two members of staff who are responsible for the day-to-day running of the station.

Our history

Nevis Radio launched in 1992 in co-operation with Ski FM from the Nevis Range ski resort. Its original purpose was to provide regular information about conditions on Aonach Mòr. At that time, broadcasts included three to four minutes of information two or three times every hour each morning, followed by two or three hours of music each evening throughout the winter.

In the summer of 1992, the station went on air as Holiday FM, which was licensed for eight weeks. The following winter, another Ski FM service operated for four months during the 1993/94 season.

The service proved very successful, and it soon became clear that there was demand for a permanent radio station for Lochaber. As a result, the Nevis Community Radio Action Group was formed to raise funds and make a local radio station possible.

In 1994, Nevis Radio was awarded a full-time licence and has been on air ever since.

We are incredibly proud of our history, particularly our role in supporting and promoting the snow sports industry, which continues to be an important part of Lochaber’s culture and economy.

Nevis Radio operated as a commercial radio station until 2013, when we became a community radio station and registered charity. This change allowed us to explore alternative ways of sustaining the station and supporting the communities we serve.

Since 2015, we have developed a strong working relationship with the high schools of Lochaber. This has helped promote students’ musical activities while also giving young people the opportunity to learn broadcasting skills and present their own shows. This work has been supported through UHI North, West and Hebrides, including SQA-accredited certification in DJing, sound production and radio broadcasting skills.

Another major milestone in our history came in 2025, when we expanded into the Oban area. Since then, we have hosted a range of events and welcomed new presenters from across North Argyll.
